Chapter 6

Wyatt woke in the morning to find the bed empty, but a note left on the pillow. Harley told him she’d catch up with him that afternoon, but she had a laundry list of things to do this morning to deal with the issues from yesterday. He breathed in the apple and cinnamon scent left behind by her shampoo. He considered sleeping a bit longer, but was anxious to help Jack with the new security cameras.

Once he was dressed, he made a call to Derrick first to update him on the current situation.

“Yeah?” Derrick answered, yawning.

Wyatt glanced at the clock and frowned. “Shit, sorry, man. Forgot about the time difference.”

“It’s fine, I’m up. What do you need? Find out any more information?”

“You could say that, and you’re not going to like it.” He told Derrick everything that had been going on at the resort since Harley took over, including the death of her dad, the health issues with her mom, and of course, the recent vandalism. “Something doesn’t feel right,” he finished.

“Doesn’t sound right either. When did the vandalism start?”

“I’m not sure. Harley thought it was just bad luck for a while. Six months ago? Maybe a year?”

“So, as long as Mr. Hart’s been eyeing this property,” Derrick muttered. “You really think he’d go this far to what, close the place down?”

“I don’t know, but he’s always been a greedy bastard.”

“True. What do you want me to do, boss?”

Wyatt stalked around the room, running his hand over the stubble on his face that was slowly turning into a rugged beard. He would’ve shaved days ago, but Harley had mentioned something about him turning into a mountain man. He smiled, picturing himself living out here with Harley so easily it startled him. He faltered and kicked an end table.

“Wyatt?”

“Sorry, right. I want you to find out if Victor’s been in contact with anyone in Colorado. If you can, get me the dates. I want to see if they fall around the same time as the incidents.”

“He usually gets to the office late. I’ll head in now and do some snooping around. Keep your phone handy.”

“I owe you one.”

“Yeah, you do. Wyatt?”

“What?”

“You sound good, man. Something tells me it’s not just the mountain air either. This Harley, you’re falling for her, aren’t you?”

Wyatt rubbed the back of his neck, wondering if he should lie. “Think I am,” he confessed. “I don’t know what it is, but it’s like I came home, man. I came home, and Harley was here waiting for me. I know it’s only been a week, but I’m falling for her.”

“If it’s right, then it’s right.”

“Really? You’re not going to talk me out of it?”

“I watched Melanie turn you into someone I didn’t recognize. All those years, I never said anything, and I should’ve. Melanie wasn’t right for you, but this Harley woman? She brought you back to yourself in what, a week? I say go for it all the way. If she makes you sound this happy, I can’t imagine what you’re like in person now.
